Action Plan for Viticulture Bairradina
1. Diagnosis

It is a visible malaise or crisis in the region of Bairrada wine - which is not very different from the national situation, perhaps with more severe or of greater visibility. Acknowledge that the economic cycle, the current state of viticulture Bairradina is a cumulative factor of this crisis.

In any case, what seems most striking is the fact that 5 years ago the region, through its Wine Commission, have held an event with the primary aim of diagnosing the Region and show paths towards the future, to which experts of both the area wine or wine and where the regional community - economic, technical, ... and it came out strongly participated documents written testimony and suggest that ways.

With regard to viticulture, ourselves, in partnership with accredited expert in the field - François Murisier, in addition to oral presentations (which the CVB has written and published) study and prepare a text (potentially the Bairrada wine), that CVB also published. What seems worrying is the fact that 5 years, essentially this document is current! with some notes to that effect, attached to this writing the text that we consider part of the current diagnosis.

Questionamo us: what happened technically in Bairrada in 5 years? - No wine technology? - There is no dissemination of knowledge? (publications, ... ..)? Notwithstanding dalguma yes to these questions, we believe that the main cause of the crisis of the Bairrada wine is a deep lack of communication, training, confidence and self-esteem. In times like these one can close on itself.

The non-trust, the weak production of knowledge and lack of synergies, undermine each and every one of the parties, essentially weakening the region. The creation of some of the "exploratory" of experimentation and dissemination - "observatories" will be very useful, especially if the economic agents are actually working - and we have to date indicators assured that indeed they are! But these "camps" in itself little progress will be their own regional bodies do not feel "their fields, their instruments of support.

Training should first apply to the agents now involved in "observation" and must be oriented to the "weak points" or bottlenecks in the region. If so and the forces of synergism overcome the bottlenecks, blockades or no communication, then the region of Bairrada can and must make a leap forward - and the urgent need! It is with this spirit that we are in the Action Plan for Bairradina wine.

2. Proposal for Action Plan (second DSPAA)

Areas of Intervention

1 - Clarify the role of Berry in the regional context. The Berry is an unquestionable heritage must be preserved and enhanced. This means assuming that only should be deployed in appropriate locations - "Roughly" in lime-clay land and must be conducted in order to produce grapes of quality - good sound and mature (necessarily at the expense of proper management and control of existing vegetation and microclimate);

2 - Find additional varieties to the vine varieties of Bairrada - for lot with Berry, and to make economically viable in some soils where the vines can not be in Baga culture (Merlot?, Syrah, "Jaen", Roriz?)

3 -- Definitely review the type of soil maintenance. The traditional technique and dedicated practice throughout the region, raising the total soil (no minimum or partial mobilization!) Is a perfect attack the effective maintenance of the vineyard (the preservation of soil, operation of machinery, health and phytosanitary treatments ).

Strategies: act immediately in the "experimental fields / observatories" in accordance with the above objectives. Bring forward training, taking into account the larger local technical weaknesses.

Indicators for monitoring and evaluation of results:
- Microclimate;
- Rot;
- Maturing (opportunity to harvest - and healthy and mature grapes)

Work to develop / Action Plan will lead to greater regularity of making gains overall with more than 30% (sugar, color, health of the grapes)

Forces: economic agents involved

- I demonstrated by the gracious giving of their vineyards and active participation in the "Field / observatories" already in motion.
- Grape Varieties with strong image Baga and Maria Gomes (this highly problematic if not properly conducted or located).

Weaknesses: lack of communication
- Fragile productivity of "knowledge".
- Lower confidence, training and self-esteem.
- Technology inappropriate to caste Baga (% high in the Region)

-- Create fields / observatories (are running);
- Act "on the ground" with their own economic and sustain and enhance the images that are good;
- Learn and seek to create them.

- They are a reality - the current state of the "row" is the main indicator
- Or the technology and regional wine image becomes more credible or more days of waiting will be bitter in Bairrada.

4. Point of the current situation

1st After indications of the CVB and joint analysis in eVB, got the 1st approximation of the "camps" as an "observation" and would be made on which alternative cultural and monitoring the effects (harvesting and processing of data). 1 This document is already prepared and was available either to the CVB wants to DRABL.

2nd After full implementation of all the "observatories" will be then held the 1st course - training for those in paragraph 1 (staff directly involved in the "field-observatories," as well as technical and CVB eVB involved in the Action Plan.

3rd The main objectives to be achieved, generally for all fields will be sought "cultural routes" that provide better results than the current, measured directly by the yield and quality parameters and indirectly throughout the year by the parameters leading to outcomes such as levels of photosynthesis, vigor, climate, ..., state of health of the grapes, ....

4th Gradually progress reports will be produced shall attest to the progress of work. In this framework has been established the 1st report the identification of experimental fields and observatories subject to final assessment of the CVB and the 2nd report is Annex 4 of this file.

5th Due to the diagnosis can generally performed classify as the Bairrada wine region of technology unsuited to the current situation, patterns of vegetation of its main caste (Berry) and tomorrows culture (maintenance of soil) to the inappropriate dominant soil type (clay) and its climate (frequent rains the harvest and spring).
